My freshmen year of
college in 1998 was when I had what would be classified as
"moderate" cystic acne vulgaris with some deep nodules. The six
pictures in this section illustrate my skin during the last three
years of my college career from 1999 to 2001. My major trouble areas
for acne blemishes were my forehead, cheek, chin and neck. I also
had "body acne" on my chest, back and shoulders. During
this period I had been inconsistently using oral antibiotics and a
variety of topical anti-acne medications without any long term
results. |

As I
mentioned above, my course of Accutane and the generic Sotret brand
of Isotretinoin was from December 2003 to June 2004. In the first
picture in this section, you can still see the red marks left over
from the massive "multi-zits" that exploded on my cheek, neck and
chin during the initial breakout at the two week mark. |

By the end
of January and the beginning of February 2004, which was around the
one month mark, my face was starting to look significantly better. I
was no longer worried about acne, but instead I had to suffer
through the side effects of Accutane including dry eyes, dry
cracking lips, increased sensitivity to the sun, dry skin, dry
scalp, dandruff, and a red bumpy rash on my hands. I discuss all of
the products that I found worked best to alleviate the side effects
in my detailed Accutane Journal. |

By March
2004, my third month of taking Accutane, I had the side effects
mostly under control. My skin was looking clear but always with a
red sunburned look caused by the increased UV sensitivity. My self
esteem and confidence was soaring as evidenced by the big beaming
smiles that are mostly absent in the "Before Accutane" pictures
section above. |

The last
few months of my six month Accutane treatment were considerably
easier since I had my side effects relatively under control and my
skin was looking better every day. Even though my face was clearer
than it had been in close to a decade, I had learned my lesson about
being consistent while on the antibiotics and continued to take my
40mg Isotretinoin pills twice a day without missing a single dose. |

August 2004 - Chest

The first
three pictures above were taken two months after I completed my 6
month Accutane treatment. The 3 pictures below are from a over a
year after I took my last Isotretinoin pill. If you look closely
beneath the dark hairs on my chest, all of the body acne cystic
nodules have disappeared. I don't have any "before" pictures of my
chest or back because prior to using Accutane, I didn't have the
confidence to take off my shirt in front of other people except for
my closest friends. |

It's been a
few years since the last pictures on this page were taken, I'm about
to turn 29 years of age, and my face still looks just as clear. I'm
almost 100% certain that I'll never have to worry about acne again
thanks to Isotretinoin. Click on the following links to return to my
