Sulfacet-R is a
brand name anti-acne drug that contains the active ingredient
sulfacetamide-sulfur. Sulfacetamide-sulfur is composed of two major components which are sodium sulfacetamide and sulfur. The sodium sulfacetamide in Sulfacet-R acts an antimicrobial and antibacterial agent while the sulfur also kills the P. Acnes bacteria and dries some of the oil on your face. The most common mild side effects of Sulfacet-R include burning, stinging, dryness, peeling, itching, and a warm feeling on your skin. There are some rare but serious side effects that could occur from using Sulfacet-R including severe headaches, vomiting, and swelling of the face, lips and tongue. |
On some complexion types, Sulfacet-R can cause discoloration of the skin especially in dark skinned patients. If you experience any change in your skin color while using any sulfacetamide-sulfur based anti-acne medication, discontinue use and tell your dermatologist or doctor. Sulfacet-R has been classified as an FDA Category C drug so it should not be used by pregnant women since it could cause birth defects. |
